Head of the family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Raila Junior, has come to the defence of his sister Winnie Odinga as cracks continue to emerge in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking during the ODM founders’ dinner on Saturday, November 15, 2025, Junior indicated that their family had always been strong despite persecutions and intimidations.

From Jaramogi Odinga to their late father, Raila, the head of Odinga’s family explained that the fight will continue with Winnie Odinga, a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), leading the way.

Junior made it clear that the family would throw its weight behind Winnie as she manoeuvres the rugged political terrain.

“The Odingas, we are one big family, and we are strong we have a dream that was there from before, from Jaramogi to Baba, and we are still fighting for this dream,” Junior stated.

“We are together as one family because I am strong, and even Winnie, my sister, is also strong. She has started her journey, and we will be with her holding her hands,” he reiterated.

Winnie’s bold call

Raila Junior’s remarks came shortly after Winnie sparked a storm within ODM ranks by proposing that the party hold a National Delegates Conference to manage the party’s relationship with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government under the broad-based pact.

Speaking in Mombasa during ODM at 20 celebrations on Saturday, November 15, 2025, Winnie impugned the capacity of the current crop of leaders to make informed decisions for the party, an issue she asserts is best left for the party’s delegates in the absence of Raila.

According to Winnie, many of the leaders who had taken it upon themselves to manage the matter cannot be relied on to do so on behalf of the party.

“When it came to the matter of broad-based government, the people of ODM trusted one person to manage that complicated relationship; that person is Baba Raila Odinga,” she stated.

“That relationship is complicated, and the people taking upon themselves to manage it now, are they capable of managing that relationship? That is a question for the people to answer. It is why I am requesting we go back to the people and see who the people will pick to handle that relationship,” she stated. We need to go back to the people and have NDC and see who the people want to pick to manage that relationship,” she added.

Nonetheless, Party leader Oburu Odinga vowed to engage Winnie Odinga over the matter at the family level.
