Winnie Odinga reveals she never enjoyed school despite studying in the US

East African Legislative Assembly Member of Parliament Winnie Odinga has revealed that she never particularly enjoyed school, despite studying in the United States.
Speaking in an interview aired on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Winnie explained that her dislike for school started when she was young and continued throughout her life.
Asked whether she enjoyed schooling in the US, Winnie said her experience was not particularly enjoyable. She explained that the US was an interesting place and that people needed to find a city that suited them.
“Not particularly. The US is an interesting place. You have to find the city for you,” Winnie said.
Winnie recalled that when she joined school in the US, she was in Philadelphia. Despite her experience in the US, she said school was something she had never enjoyed.
“That time when I joined, I was in Philadelphia. But all my life I have never enjoyed school,” Winnie said.
She explained that her dislike for school could be traced back to her childhood. Winnie recalled an incident from her kindergarten years when her older brother was preparing to go to university.

Winnie said she wanted to leave kindergarten and go with her brother because she was already tired of school. She explained that she found the repeated nature of school difficult and wanted something different.
“My mother would tell you when I went to kindergarten, and my older brother was going to university, I said, okay, I am done with this; I am going with him,” Winnie said.
She further explained that the repetitive nature of school was one of the things she disliked most. Winnie said she had a different experience at home, which made her want to spend more time there.
“I…the repetitiveness of it..I didn’t like it,” Winnie said.
Winnie added that her home life was exciting and that she wanted to be more involved in it. She explained that this was one of the reasons she wanted to move away from the school environment and spend more time at home.
“I had such an exciting home life, and I wanted to be more part of that,” Winnie said.
Winnie has also described herself as extremely introverted and very shy. She explained that people sometimes misunderstand her personality because she is comfortable speaking in public.
She added that being able to speak well in public does not mean she is outgoing in her private life. Winnie said she remains very shy despite her public profile.
