Saturday Weather: Kenya Met predicts rain, strong winds and heat extremes countrywide

The Kenya Meteorological Department has released its daily weather outlook valid through 9:00 pm on September 19, 2026, outlining what citizens should expect across the country.
In the forecast, the department indicates that rainfall is to be expected in some parts of Kericho, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Kisumu, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Nyamira, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nairobi, Embu, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi counties.
Strong winds and afternoon thunderstorms
Beyond the rainfall, severe wind conditions are set to affect parts of northern Kenya and the coastal strip.
The weather agency cautioned that “Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of above 25 knots (12.5m/s) expected over parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui Counties.”

For Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria basin, atmospheric conditions will shift as the day progresses. Bungoma County is set for sunny intervals, moderate showers with thunderstorms expected over few places, while neighbouring areas in Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Kericho face a similar afternoon thunderstorm pattern.
Coastal counties including Mombasa, Kwale, and Kilifi will start with morning light showers before experiencing sunny intervals and occasional afternoon showers.
Temperature extremes across regions
Nairobi residents will start the day with cloudy, sunny intervals alongside a maximum temperature of 25°C and a night minimum of 13°C.
High-altitude areas in Central Kenya will remain chilly, with Nyandarua recording the lowest minimum temperature in the country at 08°C alongside a maximum of 20°C. Maximum temperatures in Nyeri will reach 23°C, while Kiambu warms up to 25°C.
Meanwhile, northern regions will face intense daytime heat. Mandera leads the country with a maximum temperature of 37°C, followed by Turkana at 36°C, Wajir at 35°C, and Garissa at 34°C.
Local daylight times show Nairobi sunrise at 6:23 am and sunset at 6:29 pm, Mombasa sunrise at 6:12 am and sunset at 6:18 pm, while Kisumu experiences sunrise at 6:31 am and sunset at 6:38 am.
