Nairobi CBD turns into a spectacle as George Ruto unveils 6 new matatus under his 98 Sacco

President William Ruto’s son George Ruto has commissioned a new fleet of matatus under his 98 Sacco, unveiling the vehicles after they underwent extensive modifications at a garage ahead of their entry onto Nairobi’s roads.

The commissioning took place on Friday, September 18, 2026, with the latest development shared on the Instagram account Official 98 Sacco, which has recently been established to showcase activities surrounding the transport business.

A video posted on the account captured the moment the customised matatus were formally commissioned after spending time at a garage where they had been undergoing modifications and upgrades.

George was present for the ceremony alongside the entire crew that will operate the vehicles, including drivers and conductors, who were dressed in white as they gathered around the newly completed fleet.

The commissioning also took on a religious tone after George invited a pastor to pray over the vehicles before they began their journey from the garage.

The pastor led prayers over the new fleet, asking for God’s protection and blessing over the vehicles, their crews and the journeys they would undertake on Nairobi’s busy roads.

The religious ceremony was followed by a symbolic blessing of the matatus, with the pastor sprinkling holy water over the vehicles as George and members of the crew watched.

The moment marked the culmination of the work that had gone into transforming the vehicles at the garage, where they had been receiving the distinctive modifications associated with Nairobi’s highly customised nganya culture.

Once the ceremony was complete, the newly commissioned matatus slowly filed out of the garage before forming a convoy.

The vehicles then snaked onto the road one after another, with their music systems turned on and their customised lights flashing as they travelled together.

Their departure offered a dramatic first glimpse of the fleet outside the garage after the modifications had been completed, with the vehicles moving as a coordinated convoy while their lighting systems blinked in unison.

George appeared to be at the centre of the proceedings as the vehicles made their way out, marking another major development in the expansion of the 98 brand.

The latest fleet comes as George continues to expand his presence in Nairobi’s matatu industry through the 98 brand, which has become associated with a growing collection of customised public service vehicles.

Earlier footage shared online had already offered a preview of six vehicles undergoing modifications at a go-down, with the matatus fitted with colourful LED lighting as work on them progressed.

The new vehicles are part of an operation that has attracted considerable attention because of the elaborate designs and entertainment features associated with George’s matatus.

His growing fleet has previously included vehicles such as Raptor, Money Fest, Matrix, Mood and Baba Yaga, which have become recognisable names within Nairobi’s nganya scene.
