Several passengers sustained injuries when a matatu veered off Magadi Road in the wee afternoon hours of Monday, August 18, 2025, and toppled into a roadside ditch.

In a video shared by viral biker Brayo, the blue minibus, which was carrying a full complement of passengers, could be seen hitting an obstacle on the busy road before losing control and rolling over.

The crash left many trapped inside and others injured on impact.

Eyewitness

Brayo, whose camera was recording as he drove along the busy road, was an eyewitness to the terrifying incident.

In the footage, he can be seen immediately stopping his motorcycle and rushing to the scene to assist those affected.

One woman had been thrown into the ditch, with part of her body still dangling from a window, crying in fear.

Brayo quickly moved to stabilise her while other bystanders arrived to join in the rescue efforts.

Other passengers could be seen wailing and struggling to break windows, while some attempted to move from the top of the overturned matatu to escape.

Onlookers gathered quickly, joining Brayo in the desperate rescue effort. The chaos was heightened by the presence of other vehicles, causing traffic snarl-ups along the busy stretch of Magadi Road as drivers slowed down to witness the accident.

Brayo was then seen desperately trying to break the matatu’s rear emergency window to help free passengers trapped inside.

The video captures him carefully lifting a woman who appeared injured and unable to walk onto his motorcycle. He then prepared to rush her to the nearest hospital for urgent medical attention, acting swiftly to ensure her safety.

Surge in accidents

Though it is unclear whether the accident claimed any lives, it comes shortly after Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, reported that a total of 2,933 fatalities had been recorded between January and August 10, 2025.

In a statement on Monday, August 11, 2025. Chirchir noted that 80 of the deaths occurred in just August alone.

“Crash data indicates a total of 2,933 fatalities have been reported between January and August 10, 2025. Unfortunately, 80 occurred over the past four days.”

The recent spike involved public service vehicles, private cars, and commercial trucks, raising serious concerns about road safety compliance.

Chirchir assured the public that these technical evaluations would be completed within seven days, with prompt implementation of recommendations to save lives.

“We are determined to get to the root causes of these accidents and implement measures that will protect all road users. Safety audits will help us identify risk factors and prevent unnecessary loss of lives,” he said.
