Senegalese President honours Raila during Mashujaa Day speech

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, on Monday, October 20, 2025, paid a moving tribute to the late Raila Odinga during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

In his address, Faye expressed deep condolences to Kenyans following Raila’s death, describing him as a statesman and a towering figure in Kenya’s democratic journey.

“Before I begin, I would like to take this opportunity to renew the heartfelt condolences of the people of Senegal to the brotherly people of Kenya on the passing of Mr Raila Odinga, a former Prime Minister and a great leader in the political history of Kenya,” he stated.

Condolences to Kenyans


President Faye conveyed his compassion to President William Ruto, Raila’s family, and the people of Kenya, wishing that Raila’s soul rest in peace.

He hailed Raila’s courage and lifelong service to democracy, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire generations across Africa.

He also thanked President Ruto and the Kenyan people for the warm reception accorded to him and his delegation since their arrival, praising Kenya as a country rich in culture and natural wonders.

“I am here at the invitation of my brother, President William Ruto, as a guest of honour on this day celebrating Kenyan heroes,” he remarked.

Honouring Kenya’s heroes


Faye emphasised the importance of honouring freedom fighters and patriots who sacrificed for the nation’s liberation.

“Our heroes deserve all honours. They deserve our respect. They deserve our admiration,” he said, commending the spirit of Kenya’s Mau Mau freedom fighters who endured suffering in pursuit of independence.

The Mashujaa Day celebrations, held for the first time in Kitui County, were attended by top government officials, dignitaries, and citizens who filled the stadium to capacity.

The event began with the arrival of President Ruto, followed by a guard of honour, military parade, and performances celebrating Kenya’s heritage.
