Not goons: MP Ronald Karauri explains viral video of men around his car in middle of Nairobi Expressway

Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri has clarified a viral video that sparked claims that goons were robbing motorists along the Nairobi Expressway.
In a video message on Friday, September 4, 2026, Karauri identified himself as the man in the white car seen in the footage and urged Kenyans to remain calm, saying the people around his vehicle were not goons.
“Good afternoon, everybody. This is Captain Karauri. I’ve just seen a video trending on social media about goons robbing motorists on the expressway,” he said.
Karauri explained that he was travelling as a passenger in the white car when the incident captured in the video occurred.
Karauri explains what happened
According to the MP, he had just come from a meeting with fellow Nairobians when he experienced a problem with the vehicle’s door.
“I was on the passenger side, and I just wanted to calm everybody down because these are not goons. These are people I was with,” Karauri said.
He explained that the car door could not close properly while the vehicle was moving, forcing him to stop on the expressway.
“My door could not close. And apparently in that particular car, as long as you’re moving, you cannot lock the doors. So I was in a bit of distress,” he said.
Karauri said the people seen around the vehicle approached after noticing that he had stopped, with the intention of helping him resolve the problem.
“So I had to actually stop right there on the expressway, and when they saw me stopped, they came to help me. So we managed to close the door and we proceeded on,” he explained.
MP urges Kenyans to calm down
Karauri maintained that the individuals captured in the viral footage were ordinary young Nairobi residents and not criminals.
“So just to clarify, these are not goons. These are normal Nairobi young people,” he said.
His clarification came after the video was widely shared on social media, with some viewers interpreting the scene as an alleged robbery incident involving motorists on the Nairobi Expressway.
Karauri concluded by urging the public not to panic over the footage.
“I think it’s just a message for everybody to calm down,” he said.
The MP also ended his message with a political remark directed at Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, saying: “Finally, Sakaja must go.”
