Kenyans began streaming into Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County early Monday morning, October 20, 2025, eager to secure their seats and be part of one of the country’s most important national celebrations, Mashujaa Day.

Residents arrived well before the official start, aware that most previous Mashujaa Day events have largely been conducted in Nairobi and other major regions. By 6 am., the stadium was already buzzing with activity, with a section of the venue partially filled as early attendees settled in.

Kenya Defence Forces and police officers rehearsed ceremonial drills, including the passing of the President, matching exercises, and other displays of discipline and unity, setting the stage for a day that promised both patriotic pride and solemn reflection.

This year’s Mashujaa Day comes amid seven days of national mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose life and legacy continue to inspire millions of Kenyans.

Heads of state and other distinguished guests, including Senegalese President Bassirou Diakhar Faye, have already arrived, taking part as guests of honour and participating in state activities alongside the celebrations.

The occasion combines national pride, reflection, and recognition, with Raila expected to take centre stage in many tributes throughout the day.

Honouring Kenya’s heroes

Mashujaa Day, celebrated annually on October 20 under the Public Holidays Act, honours Kenyans who have demonstrated exceptional courage, service, and dedication to the country.

The day blends speeches, performances, and official recognitions with cultural displays, highlighting the bravery and contributions of the nation’s heroes. This year, the National Heroes Council released the names of 180 Kenyans proposed for recognition as national heroes and heroines.

The list, published on September 16, 2025, spans categories such as the liberation struggle, entrepreneurship, human rights, philanthropy, and the creative economy. Members of the public were invited to submit their views on the proposed honorees in line with the Council’s mandate under the Kenya Heroes Act, No. 5 of 2014.

As the morning progressed, the stadium continued to fill with thousands of attendees, eager to witness the patriotic displays and pay tribute to the nation’s heroes, including Raila Odinga.
