Salasya condemns police for teargassing his supporters in Mosoriot

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has publicly denounced the police for using teargas on citizens in Mosoriot, Nandi County, describing the act as an unacceptable suppression of peaceful gatherings.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 30, 2025, when police dispersed a crowd gathered to listen to the outspoken MP, prompting strong criticism from Salasya, who called the action an act of cowardice.
“Threats and intimidation is cowardism. Why teargas peaceful people of Mosriot when they want to hear from me? It’s unacceptable Rift Valley Pia ni Kenya,” Salasya posted on X.
The statement stresses his belief that the people of Rift Valley, like all Kenyans, have the right to assemble freely without facing police aggression.
Salasya, a vocal first-term MP, self-declared himself a 2027 presidential candidate.
In April 2025, Salasya announced his candidacy under a yet-to-be-named political movement, pledging to depart from conventional politics rooted in tribal alliances and financial influence.
“Fellow Kenyans, I will contest the presidency in 2027 under a new movement—one built on the dreams of a fair, inclusive, and forward-looking Kenya,” he said.
“This will not be a party of billionaires or tribal lords, but a movement of the people.”
Salasya’s ambitions for the presidency
The Mumias East MP’s nationwide tours to drum up support have taken him to counties including Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Vihiga, Malindi, Meru, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Machakos, and, most recently, Kisii, Kilgoris, Nyamira, Kericho, and Ainamoi.

However, Salasya’s rising profile has come with challenges. He has faced multiple attacks, including a dramatic ambush on May 16, 2025, along the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway, where armed men posing as DCI officers shot at his vehicle and briefly abducted him.
Earlier, on May 10, he narrowly escaped an attempted arrest in Mombasa. These incidents, coupled with his recent assault at Nyayo Stadium, have fueled speculation that his outspoken criticism and presidential bid may be making him a target.
