As Kenya marks Saba Saba Day on Monday, July 7, 2025, the Kenya Red Cross Society has mobilised its emergency response units across the country in anticipation of unrest linked to the annual demonstrations.

Recognised as a high-tension date on the national calendar, Saba Saba has historically drawn widespread protests, often accompanied by security crackdowns and injuries.

In a public statement issued via their X, the humanitarian agency confirmed that triage points have been established in strategic locations to offer emergency medical support and facilitate rapid evacuation to hospitals when needed.

“Our teams are on the ground, ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise during the Sabasaba demonstrations,” read the post.
“We have learnt from past experiences that timely medical intervention can save lives and mitigate the impact of such events.”

Learning from the Past

The deployment comes against the backdrop of recent deadly protests where at least 16 lives were lost and over 400 people injured, prompting widespread concern over the safety of demonstrators and bystanders.

According to Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, at least ten Kenyans died during the June 25, 2025, protests, and the government is conducting investigations into the circumstances of their untimely deaths.

“More than 10 Kenyans were killed; investigations are ongoing into the circumstances under which this happened. Over 400 people were injured; close to 300 were police officers, and some left with injuries they will carry for the rest of their lives,” he stated.

With such risks in mind, the Red Cross is working proactively to minimise casualties and ensure humanitarian support is accessible throughout the day.

Kenya Red Cross has emphasised that the current measures are part of a broader emergency preparedness strategy, developed through years of experience responding to civil unrest, natural disasters, and public health emergencies.

The organisation has activated its toll-free emergency hotline, 1199, urging citizens to call for urgent assistance or report injured persons. Coordination with other humanitarian agencies and local health facilities has also been intensified to ensure smooth referral and care systems.

Ready to respond

Rooted in the principles of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality, the Kenya Red Cross continues to operate independently of the political motivations behind the protests. Their goal, the department reiterated, is to ensure that every person in need of care is reached, regardless of their role or affiliation.

Members of the public have been urged to remain informed, avoid high-risk zones, and cooperate with emergency responders for their own safety.

As the country navigates this critical moment in its democratic journey, the presence of the Kenya Red Cross serves as a vital lifeline—a reminder that in times of tension, humanitarian action must remain constant and unwavering.
