Ruto nominates John Cox Lorionokou as Registrar of Political Parties

President William Ruto has nominated John Cox Lorionokou for the position of the Registrar of Political Parties, setting the stage for a leadership change in the crucial office that oversees political party registration and regulation in Kenya.
Lorionokou, if approved is set to replace Ann Nderitu, who was recently appointed as a commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Nderitu’s exit created a vacancy in one of the most influential offices in the country’s political architecture.
In a statement issued by State House on Friday, August 15, 2025, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the nomination followed the recommendations of the Public Service Commission and was in line with the President’s constitutional mandate.
“President William Ruto, in line with his constitutional mandate, and acting on the recommendations of the Public Service Commission, has today made the following nominations in the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties: Mr. John Cox Lorionokou Registrar of Political Parties,” read the statement in part.
The President also nominated Agatha Wanjiku Wahome as Assistant Registrar of Political Parties, filling another key role in the institution.
In addition to these appointments, President Ruto has nominated Claris Awour Onganga for consideration by the National Assembly as Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). Onganga’s nomination follows a recommendation by a Selection Panel appointed via Kenya Gazette Notice No. 4651 of April 11, 2025.

According to the State House statement, the President has already forwarded the names to the National Assembly for vetting and approval, as required by law.
“The President has formally transmitted these nominations to the National Assembly for consideration and approval,” the statement confirmed.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties plays a central role in Kenya’s multi-party democracy, ensuring that political parties operate within the law, maintain transparent records, and meet statutory requirements.
Lorionokou’s leadership will come at a time when the country is preparing for a high-stakes political cycle ahead of the 2027 general elections.
If approved, Lorionokou will take charge of an office that will be instrumental in managing political party compliance, handling disputes, and ensuring fairness in political competition. His appointment is expected to influence the tone of political engagements in the coming years.
