Ruto cocooned in privilege and denial – Lawyer Willis Otieno

Constitutional lawyer Willis Otieno has delivered a scathing critique of President William Ruto’s leadership style, accusing him of being cocooned in privilege and denial about the country’s worsening economic and political crisis.
In a statement on his X account on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Otieno reflected mounting public frustration with the Kenya Kwanza administration. He said the president has grown increasingly out of touch with the reality on the ground, especially in the wake of deadly anti-government protests led by the youth.
“President Ruto is cocooned in privilege. He’s surrounded by people who tell him what he wants to hear, not what he needs to hear,” Otieno stated.
“He’s not listening to the cries of the youth, the cries of families burying their children, or the cries of a country in pain.”
Otieno further described the Head of State as a leader in denial, unwilling to acknowledge the scale of the economic hardship and social unrest gripping the country.
“He continues to act like everything is normal. He refuses to accept that his policies have pushed people into the streets. That’s not just poor leadership, that’s dangerous.”

The lawyer’s remarks come as the government faces growing criticism over its handling of protests sparked by the controversial Finance Bill, police brutality, and broader concerns over governance and accountability.
More than two dozen people have been killed in recent weeks during demonstrations, many of them young and unarmed.
“He’s living in a bubble. He talks about hustlers and bottom-up economics, but he no longer interacts with ordinary Kenyans unless it’s at choreographed events. That disconnect is why the youth no longer trust him,” he said.
“He is cocooned in privilege. That is the most accurate. He has become blind to the suffering because power has made him comfortable and inaccessible.”
Otieno also warned that unless the president changes course, he risks further isolating himself from the very people who elected him.
“This is not just a communications problem. It’s a crisis of legitimacy and empathy. If he doesn’t wake up, he will go down as a president who lost the plot and the people,” he said.
