Ruth Odinga warns against ODM division, calls for unity

Ruth Odinga has sent a strong message to those eyeing control of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following the death of her brother and long-time party leader, Raila Odinga.
Speaking firmly during a public address, Ruth made it clear that ODM’s legacy and unity must be protected at all costs.

“ODM belongs to us. Those who want to take ODM don’t even know how we started ODM. We must be united. ODM must be united. If it is not strong… ODM must unite,” she said.
Her remarks come at a time when discussions about the party’s future leadership are intensifying, with members and supporters seeking direction after Raila’s passing. Ruth emphasised that division within ODM would weaken its foundation and urged members to stand together.
“We cannot have one ODM here and another ODM somewhere else. ODM is ours. And we are going to go to any negotiation table with a strong, united ODM,” she stated.
Oburu takes interim charge
Following Raila Odinga’s death, the ODM National Executive Council (NEC) appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the acting party leader.
The announcement was made during a press briefing on Thursday, October 16, 2025.
According to the NEC, Oburu will hold the position until a substantive leader is elected to fill the void left by the late former Prime Minister.

“With this regard, the NEC has designated the Senator of Siaya County, Oburu Odinga, to be the acting party leader until the time the top party leaders meet and elect a substantive leader to fill the big shoes that have been left by our leader,” the party said in its statement.
Oburu Odinga, Raila’s elder brother, has been a long-serving member of the ODM party and has played a key role in its growth and stability over the years.
His appointment is seen as a way of maintaining continuity and ensuring calm within the party during this transition period.
Ruth Odinga’s remarks reflect the growing call for unity among all the party members and its leaders, as ODM navigates one of the most defining moments in its history.
