The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a series of temporary road closures and traffic diversions across Nairobi on Sunday, August 10, 2025, ahead of the highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) match between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

In a statement on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the police said Aerodrome Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout will be completely closed to traffic. Additionally, one lane each on Lang’ata Road from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabouts and on Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala Roundabout will also be inaccessible to motorists during the event.

Motorists coming from Mombasa Road heading to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) are advised to use alternative routes such as Likoni Road and Enterprise Road near General Motors, or take the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni. Those travelling from Lang’ata Road to the CBD should divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.

For motorists leaving the CBD toward Thika Road, covering areas like Ruiru, Juja, and Thika, diversion routes include Limuru Road or Kiambu Road. Matatus ferrying passengers to Kasarani are instructed to use the Ruaraka, Baba Ndogo, and Ngomongo Roads leading to Ngomongo Roundabout.

Motorists approaching Nairobi from Thika Road are urged to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road, and avoid Thika Road unless traveling directly to the Moi International Sports Centre or Kasarani Stadium.

The police have deployed additional officers citywide to enforce the traffic regulations and maintain order. They warned that any violations during the event would attract stern action.

“We are working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure the free flow of traffic during the event,” said the NPS in a statement.

“Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” the statement added.

The service urged the public to “avoid Thika Road unless travelling to Moi International Sports Centre or Kasarani Stadium” to minimize congestion.

This proactive traffic management aims to guarantee smooth movement and heightened security during the sporting event while minimizing inconvenience to Nairobi residents.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars will face Morocco on Sunday in a match that promises to be a key highlight of the tournament. The police have reassured the public of their readiness to handle the increased traffic and security demands.
