Nairobi County Women Representative Esther Passaris has joined leaders who have condemned the attacks directed at political activist Morara Kebaso at Bomas of Kenya during public participation in the impeachment process of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kebaso faced a hostile environment when he arrived at Bomas, where the public participation was taking place, and had to be whisked to safety.

According to Passaris, the chaos that erupted was uncalled for, and she has asked for open dialogue, which she believes will help democracy thrive.

“This was completely uncalled for! Freedom of speech and public participation are well enshrined in our Constitution.

“Allowing diverse viewpoints, including those that may be controversial, is essential for genuine discourse.

“Cherry-picking speakers undermines democratic principles and limits public engagement, which should reflect a broad spectrum of opinions. Democracy thrives on open dialogue rather than selective participation,” Passaris said in a statement on X posted on Saturday, September 5, 2024.

Omtatah’s call

Busia County Senator Okiya Omtatah also condemned the events that occurred at Bomas and called for an investigation into the matter.

“It is imperative that we protect the rights of every citizen to voice their opinions without the threat of harm or intimidation. The law enforcement agencies should thoroughly investigate this incident, hold the perpetrators accountable, and ensure that measures are in place to prevent such acts in the future,” Omtatah said.

The senator called for the creation of an environment where divergent opinions are accommodated and where everyone will feel safe expressing their views.

“Moreover, we must collectively stand against a culture of violence and hostility that stifles dissent and discourages active citizenship. It is only through robust and respectful discourse that we can address the pressing issues facing our nation.

“Let us unite to foster an environment where every individual feels safe and empowered to engage in the democratic process. The right to express differing opinions is fundamental to our progress as a society, and we must protect it resolutely,” the legislator added.

The public participation will enter day two on Saturday with the events organised at constituency levels across the country.
