Orwoba out, Consolata Nabwire in – IEBC announces UDA Senate change

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially gazetted Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as a nominated senator under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), replacing Gloria Orwoba, who was expelled from the ruling party in May.

In a gazette notice dated August 15, 2025, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon confirmed Nabwire’s appointment. The new senator, who hails from Kimilili in Bungoma County, had been on UDA’s 2022 party nomination list.

Her assumption of office follows months of political wrangles that ended with a High Court ruling dismissing Orwoba’s petition against her expulsion.

Orwoba’s fallout with UDA began after she publicly associated with opposition rallies, despite repeated warnings from party officials. In May, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) unanimously ratified her expulsion on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Committee, citing gross misconduct and violation of the party constitution.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar announced at the time that Orwoba had not only disregarded the party’s code of conduct but had also tarnished its public image.

According to Omar, the disciplinary report showed that Orwoba ignored summons to appear before the committee and instead sent responses through her lawyers. The NEC argued that this defiance undermined the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

“After a comprehensive review of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and in line with Article 29 of the UDA Constitution, the NEC found Senator Orwoba’s actions incompatible with the values and objectives of the party,” Omar stated during a press briefing on May 19, 2025.

The decision was formally communicated to the Registrar of Political Parties and the Senate Speaker, setting in motion the process that culminated in her removal. Orwoba challenged the move in court, but Justice Lawrence Mugambi dismissed her case on August 13, clearing the way for IEBC to gazette Nabwire.

With the gazettement now in place, Nabwire takes up her new role in the Senate, effectively ending Orwoba’s turbulent tenure.
