The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published instructions on how ballot papers and box lids will look in the upcoming general election.

In a statement shared on X on August 12, 2026, the electoral body released the official breakdown showing the “Ballot Paper/Ballot Box Lid Colour for the Six (6) Elective Positions” to help voters navigate polling stations with ease.

To keep the voting process simple and clear, the commission pointed out that “the colour of the Ballot Paper MATCHES the respective Ballot Box Lid.”

Using distinct visual markers helps voters identify the right container quickly, cutting down on simple mistakes during big elections. Research on electoral systems published by the ACE Electoral Knowledge Network notes that “ballot paper design has an impact on two important aspects of the election process: the ability of voters to understand the choices of candidates or parties running in the election and select their choice in a valid manner.”

Matching paper shades directly with lid covers offers a straightforward guide when voters step into the booth.

1. White for president

Citizens voting for the president will handle a white ballot paper. Once marked, this paper goes into the box with a white lid.

2. Green for Member of National Assembly

Those voting for their constituency MP will receive a green ballot paper, which drops into the box fitted with a green lid.

3. Beige for Member of County Assembly

Votes for the Ward Representative (MCA) feature a beige ballot paper. This paper belongs inside the MCA box with the beige lid.

4. Yellow for Senator

The Senate choice comes on a yellow ballot paper. Voters will drop it inside the container with a yellow lid.

5. Pink for Woman Member of National Assembly

The ballot paper for the County Woman Representative is pink, matching the pink lid on the designated ballot box.

6. Blue for Governor

For the county chief executive position, voters will use a blue ballot paper and place it inside the blue-lidded box.

How and where to register as a voter

Beyond outlining the colour setup, the commission urged citizens to get ready early, sharing the message: “Jipange Mapema. Register as a Voter!”

Kenyans can complete their voter registration at any IEBC Constituency Office, any nearby Huduma Centre, or at the IEBC Customer Experience Centre on the ground floor of Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.
