Nuru Okanga speaks for first time after flying to Raila’s burial

Political activist and staunch Raila Odinga supporter Nuru Okanga has spoken for the first time since flying to Kisumu for the burial of the late ODM leader, this time turning his attention to leaders from the Mount Kenya region.
In a post shared on Facebook on Monday, October 20, 2025, Okanga stated that he would begin posting the names of Members of Parliament from Mount Kenya who stood in solidarity with mourners during the passing of Raila Odinga.
He said the gesture was meant to show which leaders had a genuine sense of unity and which ones, in his words, had chosen to play the politics of division.
“I will be posting those MPs from. MT Kenya, who stood with us mourning Baba Raila Odinga. We will tell who Mkabila is,” Nuru posted.
Okanga said that he had taken time to research the performance of Mount Kenya MPs allied to President William Ruto compared to those outside the government.
He said the findings were revealing, claiming that leaders like Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro, who are not part of government, had performed far better over the past three years.
He also accused some of the MPs who supported the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, of neglecting their constituencies, saying that their development record was uninspiring.
“I will be posting those MPs from. MT Kenya, who stood with us mourning Baba Raila Odinga. We will tell who Mkabila is. In Ruto’s government, I’ve done my research on Mt Kenya MPs allied to him, including those who impeached Gachagua, like Kimani Ichung’wah and compared them with those outside government,” he added.

However, he praised Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, describing him as the standout leader within the government side.
He said Kihungi had invested heavily in education and infrastructure, noting that Michuki Polytechnic had grown into a national institution under his leadership. He also lauded him for improving markets and roads in Kangema.
“Surprisingly, MPs like Babu Owino and Ndindi Nyoro, who are not in government, have performed far better over the past three years. The only standout on Ruto’s side is Peter Kihungi, the MP for Kangema. He replaced the late John Michuki and has heavily invested in education Michuki Polytechnic is now a national institution. He’s also improved markets and roads,” he added.
Okanga expressed gratitude to Kihungi for joining mourners in paying their last respects to Raila Odinga, describing him as one of the few leaders from the Mount Kenya region who demonstrated genuine empathy.
“He’s among the few MPs who joined us in mourning our leader Raila Odinga thank you for that, Hon. Kihungi,” Okanga added.

His remarks come just days after his emotional flight to Kisumu for Raila’s burial, a journey that came only a day after his public appeal for Ksh50,000 to facilitate his travel from Nairobi.
He had shared photos of himself aboard a Kenya Airways plane, saying he was flying to Kisumu with a heavy heart as he prepared to receive the late ODM leader’s body.
