Nuru Okanga begs Kenyans for Ksh50K to facilitate trip to Raila’s burial

Political activist Nuru Okanga has made a heartfelt appeal to Kenyans to help him raise Ksh50,000 to facilitate his travel from Nairobi to Bondo for the burial of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
Speaking to a local YouTuber on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Okanga said he wishes to be part of the final send-off for the man he has described as a hero of democracy and a father figure to millions of Kenyans.

He said that since he is currently unemployed, he is seeking public support to cover transport and logistical expenses for himself and his supporters from Nairobi to Bondo.
“I, Nuru Okanga, do not have a job, and these are the funeral arrangements of Raila Odinga, which have shocked the whole world. Anyone who has my number can reach out and support me so that I can travel,” Okanga said.
Okanga noted that the Ksh50,000 budget would cater for hiring a vehicle for the round trip, fuel costs, and other basic needs during the journey.

He emphasised that his decision to attend Raila’s burial is not political but personal, citing his long admiration for the late opposition leader’s courage and commitment to the country.
“Reach out and support me so that I can travel home because I plan to leave Nairobi tomorrow to prepare my people for the burial,” he added.
He further stated that many of his supporters from Orera Ward in his home county had already expressed interest in travelling with him to pay their last respects, adding that the fundraising would enable them to join other mourners in what he described as a national farewell to a legend.

Okanga appealed to Kenyans not to misinterpret his request as a publicity stunt, saying his intentions were genuine and deeply emotional.
He said those who can assist can reach him directly through his personal contact, noting that he would be departing Nairobi on Friday, October 17, to make the necessary preparations before the burial scheduled for Sunday.
“I have many supporters in Orera Ward who have said they want to accompany me to the burial, so I am requesting help to raise a budget of KSh50,000. The amount will cater for hiring a vehicle to and from Bondo. That is why I am appealing for this support. Those who are willing to travel with me are welcome, and to those who think I am joking by asking for help, they should remember that one day, they too might need assistance,” he said.
The late Raila Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, in India after suffering cardiac failure, is set to be buried on Sunday, October 19, at his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County.

His death triggered an outpouring of grief from across the world, with leaders describing him as a symbol of democracy and national resilience.
Initially, the public viewing of Raila’s body had been planned for Thursday at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.
However, due to the overwhelming number of mourners who turned up, the event was moved to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where thousands gathered to pay their final respects.
Raila’s body will be flown to Kisumu on Saturday for a brief public viewing at Moi Stadium before proceeding by road to Bondo for an overnight stay ahead of the Sunday burial service, which will be conducted under the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) traditions.
