Political activist and staunch Raila Odinga supporter Nuru Okanga has finally flown to Kisumu for the burial of the late ODM leader, a day after making a desperate plea for Ksh50,000 to facilitate his travel from Nairobi to Bondo.

In a post shared on Facebook on Friday, October 17, 2025, Okanga confirmed that he was en route to Kisumu together with his fellow Raila diehard, Omosh One Hour.

His update was accompanied by a series of photos showing him posing outside a Kenya Airways aircraft before boarding and later seated next to a woman inside the plane.

He expressed deep sorrow over Raila’s death, noting that he was flying to Kisumu with a heavy heart as he prepared to receive the late ODM leader’s body.

“Flying to Kisumu… my heart is heavy, my soul is shattered. Baba Raila Odinga, I still can’t believe it,” Okanga wrote.

Okanga said the moment was overwhelming and described his disbelief that he would be receiving Raila in a coffin, something he never imagined would happen in his lifetime.

“I will be receiving you in a coffin words I never imagined I would ever say. Kenya will never be the same again. 💔🕊️

Just a day earlier, on Thursday, October 16, 2025, Okanga had appealed to Kenyans for assistance, explaining that he required Ksh50,000 to travel from Nairobi to Bondo.

He said he wanted to be present for the burial of the man he considered a national hero and a personal mentor, but his financial situation made it impossible without help.

“I, Nuru Okanga, do not have a job, and these are the funeral arrangements of Raila Odinga, which have shocked the whole world. Anyone who has my number can reach out and support me so that I can travel. Reach out and support me so that I can travel home because I plan to leave Nairobi tomorrow to prepare my people for the burial,” Okanga said.

Although Okanga did not reveal how he eventually managed to travel, his latest post confirmed that he had secured his flight to Kisumu and was now set to attend Raila’s final send-off.

Okanga’s journey to Kisumu comes at a time when the country remains united in grief following Raila Odinga’s death on October 15, 2025, in Kerala, India, where he suffered cardiac arrest.

His body was returned to Kenya on Thursday and received with overwhelming emotion at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, followed by a state funeral at Nyayo Stadium on Friday.

After the ceremony in Nairobi, Raila’s body will be flown to Kisumu for a public viewing, ahead of the burial scheduled for Sunday, October 19, at his Bondo home in Siaya County.

Thousands of mourners, including national leaders, foreign dignitaries, and ordinary citizens, are expected to attend the burial to pay their final respects to the man many regarded as the face of Kenya’s struggle for democracy.
