Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has issued an indirect criticism of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over the ouster of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Through his Facebook page on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Wambugu reacted to the latest development in which Nairobi MCAs resolved to postpone the impeachment motion against Sakaja, saying dialogue rather than blame games was the path to survival in politics.

“Key lessons from Sakaja: Don’t threaten MCAs. Or claim MCAs have been paid to impeach you. Or blame the President. Or insult the leaders of the two largest parties in the Assembly. Just reach out and make friends,” he stated.

The remarks were quickly interpreted as a subtle swipe at Gachagua, who has repeatedly accused Parliament of being bribed to oust him from office in October 2024.

Since his impeachment, the Democracy for Citizens’ Party leader has consistently maintained that large sums of money exchanged hands to secure his removal.

On several occasions, he has alleged that President William Ruto engineered the scheme by financing legislators to settle political scores.

However, Wambugu’s message implied that constant public complaints and accusations were less effective than building consensus, citing Sakaja’s decision to negotiate with key political players in the Nairobi County Assembly as an example of political pragmatism.

Lessons from Sakaja’s survival

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has faced growing pressure from sections of the Assembly over allegations of mismanagement and poor service delivery.

But instead of heightening the confrontation, Sakaja opted to engage MCAs across the political divide.

The move resulted in the Assembly deferring the motion, handing him a lifeline and more time to address grievances.

Wambugu suggested that leaders under pressure should avoid combative politics and focus on constructive alliances.

His tone carried a cautionary lesson, especially for those who have clashed with the Executive and powerful political factions.

The former legislator’s statement adds to the growing debate over Gachagua’s political trajectory since his impeachment.

While Gachagua insists he was betrayed and hounded out unfairly, his critics argue that his confrontational approach alienated him from both allies and rivals.
