Advocate Ndegwa Njiru has condemned the large turnout of young people who gathered at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) during a concert organised by George Ruto to launch his new fleet of matatus dubbed “Mood”.

Taking to his social media platform on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Njiru questioned the credibility of the same youth who claim to stand for accountability, good governance, and political neutrality, yet turned out in large numbers for an event linked to a son of a prominent political figure.

“Na hawa ndio wanasema ati wanataka accountability, ati wako partyless, wako tribeless, ati na wanataka good governance? Really?”  Njiru questioned.

KICC launch

On July 18, 2025, George Kimutai Ruto, son of President William Ruto, launched his luxury matatu named Mood at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The event drew thousands of enthusiasts, particularly Gen Zs and youth, causing significant traffic disruptions in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Despite rainy weather, the launch featured a concert with DJs, a hype man, and free entry, creating a festive atmosphere. A pastor anointed the matatu with holy water and offered prayers before its debut ride, which was escorted by a convoy including George’s other matatus, Money Fest (also known as Manifest) and Matrix.

The luxury matatu

The Ksh14 million Mood matatu is a 25-seater vehicle designed for luxury and entertainment, deviating from the standard 32-seater layout.

It is said Kenya’s first solar-powered matatu is equipped with solar panels to power its high-end amenities, including 65-inch TVs, a DJ booth, bucket seats with cup holders and charging ports, a Ksh2 million sound system, LED lighting, and air conditioning.

The 2-by-1 seating arrangement prioritises passenger comfort and space, with a redesigned aisle for dancing, making it ideal for a “party-on-wheels” experience. The matatu also features a custom license plate approved by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

This launch has drawn mixed reactions among Kenyans, with some hailing George Ruto for his contribution to the Matatu culture, with some public figures like Octopizzo warning Kenyans against viewing this from a political perspective.
