Ndegwa Njiru calls out Kahiga over viral video on Raila’s death

Advocate and human rights lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has scoffed at Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his controversial utterances on the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In an X post on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, Njiru said the statement by the governor was insensitive, urging him to withdraw and apologise to both the public and Raila’s family.
“Sasa huyu Governor wa Nyeri anasema nini? That was a very insensitive statement, to say the least. Undeserving statement. He owes the country an apology. He owes Baba’s family an apology. Bure kabisa,” the statement read.
Speaking in vernacular at a funeral in Nyeri, Kahiga said the government had diverted attention and resources to Nyanza because of President William Ruto’s working relationship with Raila in the months leading up to his death.

“The plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, for you who do not travel because I was in that region, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans, because it seemed like they did away with us, but God came and brought this thing,” Kahiga said.
“So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out. But who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole? He came through in his own way. He saw up there people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”
Raila, who died of cardiac arrest on October 15, 2025, while receiving treatment in India, had entered into a working arrangement with Ruto after years of political rivalry.

Actions against Kahiga
But his remarks have drawn criticism from the Council of Governors (CoG), which has expressed deep disappointment, describing Kahiga’s comments as reckless, insensitive, and unbecoming of a leader of his stature.
“The Council of Governors registers its deep disappointment with the unfortunate utterances by Governor Kahiga Mutahi of Nyeri County,” the statement read.
“We wish to disassociate in toto with the sentiments of Governor Kahiga and note that those are personal remarks that do not reflect or represent the views of the Council of Governors, especially at this time of deep mourning.”
CoG chair Governor Abdullahi revealed that the council had convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the matter and issue a further directive.
“In light of the above, I have convened an urgent Extraordinary Council Meeting to be held tomorrow morning to deliberate on these unfortunate utterances, and a further statement will follow,” Abdullahi stated.
