Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims that the opposition has already selected its flagbearer for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, September 15, Natembeya emphasised that no opposition leader should prematurely declare themselves as the presidential candidate.

Natembeya said the selection of a flagbearer will follow a structured process, assessing both the number of supporters a candidate can rally and their resource capacity to run a credible campaign.

“We must agree as the opposition, and no one should beat his chest claiming that he is the flag bearer. These are just cold facts,” he noted. He added that the team would first evaluate the support base and resources before making any decisions.

He added, “For us to choose a flag bearer, we will start by checking the number of people you will have brought to us and the resources you have, which will be used to determine.” Natembeya said the process would ensure that the opposition remains united and strategic in its approach to challenging Ruto.

The governor stressed that until a flagbearer is chosen, the opposition remains united in focusing on countering President William Ruto’s policies.

His sentiments echo DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, who reaffirmed that the opposition remains united in its bid to unseat Ruto.

The statement comes a day after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed confidence that he is the only opposition candidate capable of unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

Gachagua confirmed that he has accepted the call to vie for the presidency and sought the support and blessings of Kenyans.

It is worth noting that the former DP had explained why he is eligible to vie for the presidency despite the ongoing court case.

“I have come home to say that I have accepted to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. Kenyans have looked and said the only leader who can remove Ruto from office is Riggy G, and I have come home to seek your blessings,” he said
