Natembeya questions Ruto’s motorcade: ‘Why do you need 35 vehicles?’

Trans Nzoia governor George Natembeya has criticised what he termed the culture of large presidential convoys and prolonged road closures, questioning whether such practices reflect the principles of servant leadership.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Natembeya expressed concern about the number of vehicles that often accompany the head of state at official functions. He argued that the heavy motorcades not only inconvenience ordinary citizens but also contradict the idea of leaders serving the people.

According to the governor, the presence of dozens of escort vehicles during routine engagements sends the wrong message about leadership and public service.

“Why do you need 35 vehicles to escort you to a small function? Why must the road be closed because the President is coming from the airport and there is no vehicle, and the police close that road for 45 minutes because the President is coming?”

Natembeya questioned the necessity of halting traffic for long periods to clear the way for presidential movement.

He further criticised the sense of privilege that he believes accompanies such arrangements, suggesting that leaders should be mindful of the struggles ordinary citizens face on the roads.

“And then you enjoy that when you are travelling on the road alone, and you feel very nice about that,” he said. “Is that servant leadership?”

This development comes a few years after President William Ruto added an armoured Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series VX-R to the list of presidential cars.

The Land Cruiser 300 series is a redesigned version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser, which is known for its off-road capabilities and durability.

The car is estimated to retail at upwards of Ksh23 million. It is an armoured version of the Land Cruiser 300 series is designed to provide 360-degree protection for the head of state.

The vehicle is equipped with advanced security features and reinforced components to ensure the president’s safety and comfort.

The vehicle delivers powerful performance and exceptional off-road manoeuvrability.

In addition to the new armoured Toyota Land Cruiser 300 series VX-R, the presidential fleet also includes several Land Cruiser 200 series, Ruto’s iconic Lexus 570, Mercedes-Benz sedans and a Mercedes-Benz limousine.
