Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared that the government will unleash the same energy used to combat terror threats like Al-Shabaab to deal with violent protesters behind recent chaos witnessed across the country.

Speaking on Saturday, July 12, 2025, during a development tour in Elgeyo Marakwet County alongside President William Ruto, Murkomen said recent protests that saw the burning of police stations, looting of businesses, and attacks on courts amounted to terrorism and attempted regime change.

He said the Ministry of Interior, in coordination with regional and county security teams, will crack down on all individuals behind such acts, regardless of their political affiliations or social status.

“The same energy and constitutional power we’ve used to fight terrorists and bandits is the same force we will use on those invading police stations, stealing guns, burning courts, and trying to storm Parliament and State House,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen dismissed claims that the protests were peaceful, describing them instead as a coordinated attempt to destabilize the government. He labelled the violence a “failed coup” and insisted it would not be tolerated.

“We are not dealing with demonstrators; we are dealing with criminals, and we will treat them accordingly. This was no maandamano it was an act of terrorism and sabotage,” the CS said.

He further warned that no one would be spared regardless of political position or age.

“There is no special treatment because of age or generation. Criminals are criminals. Whether they’re young or old, we’ll deal with them using lawful force.”

The CS also put political leaders on notice, stating that those inciting or financing violent protests would be arrested and prosecuted.

“Any leader, whether an MCA, MP or governor, who is fuelling violence, will have their day in court.”

Murkomen reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, adding that national and regional security teams had been activated to restore order.

“We will not play with the job Kenyans gave us. The lives and property of our people must be protected at all costs.”

The remarks come amid rising tensions following weeks of anti-government protests that have left public property destroyed and dozens injured.
