In a heartfelt appeal to the citizens of Nairobi, Geoffrey Mosiria, the Chief Officer of Environment, has taken to social media to rally support for the city’s street families.

Taking to his official X account in the wee hours of Sunday, July 13, 2025, Mosiria urged Kenyans to join hands with him and help street dwellers reunite with their families.

He also sought help in taking them to a rehabilitation centre or a home where they can be safe and cared for.

“Kuna swali hapa – sio kwa ubaya—mbona CBD hakuna street families kutoka……? Meanwhile, let’s join hands and help these suffering street families. It doesn’t cost you anything to help a child reunite with their family or be taken to a rehabilitation centre or a home where they can be safe and cared for. I’m doing it—and honestly, it’s what makes me happy and keeps me inspired, even as I go about cleaning our CBD,” Mosiria stated.

Nairobi street families

The issue of street families in Nairobi has been a longstanding concern, affecting not only the social fabric but also the economic vitality of the CBD.

Recent years have seen an increase in their numbers, turning it into what many describe as a “social nightmare.”

In response, Mosiria is advocating for a comprehensive policy that includes rehabilitation programs and the construction of a dedicated rehabilitation centre in Ruai, as proposed by the Nairobi City County Assembly.

Mosiria rescues a teacher

Mosiria’s appeal comes weeks after he stepped in to help a university graduate who had lost everything and ended up living on the streets.

In an emotional statement shared on his X account on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Mosiria recounted the journey of a man once full of hope, whose life had taken a painful turn.

According to Mosiria, the man is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, trained as a biology and chemistry teacher. He once had a bright future ahead of him, but life had other plans.

“The man seated next to me today is not just anyone. He is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, a trained biology and chemistry teacher, once full of dreams and hope,” Mosiria wrote.

However, after losing his job, the man faced rejection from his own family. Depression slowly took over and eventually led him to the streets, where he became part of the street family, forgotten and broken.
