By Nyaboga Kiage,

Miguna Miguna, the Kenya-Canadian lawyer who was controversially deported from Kenya to Canada and denied access back has officially announced that he will be running for the Nairobi governor’s seat.

Miguna will be flying the Thirdway Alliance Kenya ticket, the party said on Monday, December 28, 2021.

In a statement, the party described him as a leader who has sacrificed for Kenyans, saying that he was the most suitable to take over from Governor Mike Sonko who was recently impeached by the Senate.

“Dr Miguna Miguna is a Kenyan citizen by birth ID number 2790598 who has sacrificed and worked for this great nation and is the answer to this bankrupt leadership which has deprived development in Nairobi,” the statement read in part.

Mr Fredrick Okang’o, the party’s Secretary-General told Mediamax Digital that the party officials met with officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) on Monday morning where they discussed details of Miguna’s candidature.

“He has given us a go ahead and we shall sign all the documents on his behalf until the day he will jet into the country,” he said.

However, embattled Thirdway Alliance leader Dr Ekuru Aukot, who flew the party’s ticket in the 2017 General Election, dismissed the claims Miguna.

Dr Aukot was expelled from his party in September 2020 after long-standing row, according to the party’s National Executive Committee.

Last week, Miguna said that he had been advised by Waikwa Wanyoike, a constitutional lawyer and co-founder of Katiba Institute, to run for the seat.

The by-election is scheduled for February 18, 2021.
