Lawyer Willis Otieno warns Kenya facing social economic, political collapse

Lawyer Willis Evans Otieno has warned that Kenya is facing both social and economic collapse.
Through his X handle on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the outspoken lawyer said many families are struggling to meet their basic needs.
In his message, Otieno lamented that the gulf between the rich and the poor has never been wider as leaders continue to flaunt opulence without shame.
He cautioned that this imbalance could lead the nation into deeper instability if urgent reforms are not implemented.
“Socially, the gulf between the rich and the poor has never been wider, with families struggling to afford basic needs as leaders flaunt opulence without shame, “Otieno wrote on X.

Kenya’s economic hardship
The lawyer highlighted that Kenya’s economy is currently chained to heavy and unsustainable debt.
According to him, corruption continues to choke public institutions, while government-backed digital platforms benefit cartels instead of citizens.
He further explained that the looting of public resources has worsened living standards, leaving millions unable to afford food, healthcare, and education.
Otieno stressed that unless corruption and debt mismanagement are addressed, Kenya’s economy will continue to collapse, widening the suffering of common citizens.
He described this as a moral failure of leadership that undermines national growth and social stability.
Politicians blamed
Beyond economic challenges, Otieno accused Kenya’s political class of holding the country hostage.
He said that both Parliament and county governments have been reduced to rubber stamps of theft, while national leadership treats power as a private business.
“Economically, the country is chained to odious debt, suffocated by corruption, and looted through schemes like the so-called digital platforms that serve cartels more than citizens.

“Politically, the nation is held hostage by a selfish elite that treats power as a private business, while Parliament and counties have been reduced to rubber stamps of theft,” Lawyer Willis Otieno wrote on X.
The lawyer also raised alarm over what he termed as growing threats to the Judiciary, warning that weakening the independence of the courts would remove the last shield protecting the Constitution.
Otieno concluded by stating that Kenya is walking on a dangerous path unless leaders abandon selfish interests and focus on rebuilding the nation socially, economically, and politically.
His remarks have sparked broad debate online, with many Kenyans agreeing that the country is at a tipping point.
