Key Nairobi roads to be affected by CHAN fixtures on Thursday

Nairobi residents should expect significant traffic disruptions on Thursday, August 7, 2025, due to the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) tournament.
The National Police Service has announced temporary road closures and traffic diversions to help manage movement around the city during the football event.
In a statement released on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the police said several roads leading to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, will be affected. The closures are aimed at easing congestion and ensuring the safety of fans and players heading to and from the stadium.
According to the police, Aerodrome Road will be closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout. One lane of Lang’ata Road, stretching from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout, will also be closed. In addition, one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout will be affected.
To reduce inconvenience, alternative routes have been provided. Motorists coming from Mombasa Road and heading to the city centre are advised to use Likoni Road through Enterprise Road near General Motors, or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni.
Drivers from Lang’ata Road intending to access the CBD are encouraged to take Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout. Meanwhile, those leaving the city centre for Thika Road can use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road as better options.
Matatus ferrying passengers to Kasarani Stadium have also been given a new route. They are required to use Ruaraka through Baba Ndogo Road and Ngomongo Road, leading to Ngomongo Roundabout.
The police further advised motorists from Thika Road heading into the CBD to use the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road or Limuru Road to avoid unnecessary delays. They also strongly warned drivers to avoid using Thika Road unless they are specifically going to the stadium.
“The National Police Service is working collaboratively with relevant agencies to ensure the free flow of traffic. Additional police officers have been deployed and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules,” the NPS said in the statement.
The CHAN 2024 tournament has drawn thousands of football fans from across the continent, and Nairobi is expected to experience heightened activity, especially around the main sports venues. The police are urging all road users to cooperate fully and plan their journeys early to avoid being caught up in traffic jams.
