DFB yet to decide Nagelsmann’s fate after Germany’s World Cup disappointment

The German Football Association (DFB) has not made a decision on the future of national team coach Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s shock elimination from the FIFA World Cup at the hands of Paraguay.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, that the federation had begun assessing the reasons behind the team’s disappointing campaign, saying discussions had already taken place with Nagelsmann as well as senior football officials Andreas Rettig and Rudi Voller after what he described as a painful exit.

Dismal performance

“We agree that the performance at the World Cup does not meet our standards,” Neuendorf said. He explained that the federation would spend the next few days evaluating why the squad failed to deliver on its promise and fell short of expectations.

“We cannot and do not want to simply return to business as usual after such a setback with a view to the tasks ahead,” Neuendorf said.

Germany, four-time world champions, bowed out in the round of 32 after drawing 1-1 with Paraguay before suffering a 4-3 defeat in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Nagelsmann, whose current agreement with the DFB extends through UEFA Euro 2028, acknowledged after the match that discussions about his position were inevitable, while insisting he remained committed to his role.

“I am definitely not someone who runs away, but of course I know the mechanisms in football,” he said. “I have a contract and am available, but in the end, I know how football works.”

The 38-year-old replaced Hansi Flick as Germany coach in September 2023. Under his leadership, Germany reached the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024 before losing to eventual champions Spain. The team also qualified for the Nations League finals for the first time, ultimately ending the competition in fourth place. However, the loss to Paraguay means Germany has now suffered three straight early exits at the FIFA World Cup.

If the DFB opts to make a coaching change, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is widely viewed as one of the leading contenders for the position.

Germany’s next assignment comes on September 24 when they face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. Greece and Serbia are the other teams in their group.
