Kenya Met: Nairobi among regions to experience rainfall with storms

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of increased rainfall in several parts of the country this weekend, with Nairobi among the regions expected to be affected.

The regions to be impacted include the Central Highlands, Nairobi and its environs, as well as Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and parts of northwestern Kenya.

According to the forecast on Saturday, August 9, 2025, moderate to heavy rains are already being experienced in some areas and are set to intensify.

Afternoon and evening storms are also possible in these areas, the weatherman said, urging the public to monitor updates from the Kenya Met Department and take necessary safety precautions during the rainy period.

“Weekend Rains. Moderate (5–20 mm) to heavy (>20 mm) rains are already falling in parts of the country and will spread with stronger intensity on Saturday, 9th Aug 2025. Central Highlands (incl. Nairobi), Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley | Northwestern Kenya. Afternoon/evening storms are possible,” read the statement.

More weekend forecast

According to the department, the rains, which began on Friday, August 8, 2025, in the Central Highlands, are expected in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties.

Similarly, in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions, rain is forecast in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.

Other counties expected to experience a similar weather pattern include Kericho, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

“Ongoing moderate (5–20 mm) to heavy (>20 mm) rains across the country. Scattered rainfall is being experienced and is expected to continue and intensify over several parts of the country,” Kenya Met noted.

“Please stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially in areas prone to poor drainage, dust, or strong winds,” the weather department added.

While most parts of the country were expected to receive rain, the meteorological department stated that parts of the south-eastern lowlands would remain cloudy and dry over the weekend.

Counties in the southeastern lowland region are Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta Counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.

“Cold and cloudy conditions will persist intermittently over parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley,” the weather department added.

In the advisory, the meteorological department also warned of a possible drop in temperatures in some parts of the country, particularly in counties located within Central Kenya.

As per the outlook, temperature in the counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi was expected to fluctuate between 10°C and 12°C.

Additionally, Kenya Met urged members of the public to prepare for strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots over the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.
