Mombasa’s Al-Kheir school bus involved in accident at Kijabe, students confirmed safe

Students and teachers from Al-Kheir School in Mombasa have been confirmed safe after the school bus they were travelling in was involved in a road accident in Kijabe.
In an official statement shared on Tuesday, August 4,2026, by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir said there were no fatalities or serious injuries reported following the incident, expressing gratitude for the safety of the students, teachers and other passengers aboard the bus.
“My attention has been drawn to the unfortunate road traffic accident involving a school bus ferrying students from Al-Kheir School, Mombasa, in Kijabe. I am pleased to confirm that all the students are safe and are receiving the necessary care and support following the incident,” Nassir said in a statement.
“First and foremost, we thank the Almighty that there were no fatalities or serious injuries. We remain deeply grateful for His protection over our children, teachers and all those on board.”
He said he immediately contacted the school principal after receiving news of the accident to get an update on the situation.
“Upon receiving the news, I immediately reached out to the school principal to receive an update on the situation,” he added.
County’s support
The Mombasa County government has also made arrangements to facilitate the safe return of the students to Mombasa, with officials remaining in contact with the school and relevant authorities until all learners are reunited with their families.
“The County Government of Mombasa has also made arrangements to facilitate the safe return of the students to Mombasa tomorrow, and we will continue to remain in close contact with the school and the relevant authorities until every child is safely reunited with their families,” the statement reads.
Governor Nassir assured parents and guardians that the welfare of the students remains a priority, while thanking emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies and members of the public who assisted at the scene.
“I wish to assure parents and guardians that the welfare of our children remains our foremost priority. We also thank the emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies and all the good Samaritans who responded swiftly to assist at the scene,” Nassir added.
“We continue to pray for the quick recovery of those who sustained minor injuries and wish the students and their teachers safe passage back home.”
