The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intensified downpours expected to hit Nairobi, the Rift Valley, and several other regions beginning Thursday, October 23, 2025.

According to the weatherman’s Advisory No. 03/2025 issued on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, rainfall currently being experienced over parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and Highlands West of the Rift Valley is projected to intensify to more than 30 millimetres in 24 hours and spread eastwards to other regions, including the capital city and the South-Eastern Lowlands.

“HEAVY RAINFALL ADVISORY (No. 03/2025) Issued: 22nd October 2025 | Valid: 23rd–30th October 2025 Rainfall currently affecting parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley and Highlands West of the Rift Valley is expected to intensify to more than 30 mm in 24 hrs and spread to the Highlands East of the Rift (including Nairobi) and South-Eastern Lowlands from Thursday, 23rd October 2025,” the advisory shared via X read in part.

“The heavy rainfall is expected to continue and extend to parts of the North-East from 30th October 2025, marking the likely onset of the OND 2025 short rains over many areas.”

The weatherman further indicated that the heavy rainfall will persist through the week and extend to parts of Northeastern Kenya from October 30, 2025, signalling the onset of the 2025 October–November–December (OND) short rains season across most parts of the country.

“The heavy rainfall is expected to continue and extend to parts of the North-East from 30th October 2025, marking the likely onset of the OND 2025 short rains over many areas,” Kenya Met stated.

Flood and landslide risks

Kenya Met has cautioned residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant, noting that the expected rainfall could trigger flooding, flash floods, and landslides, particularly in flood-prone and steep regions of the Rift Valley and Western Kenya.

Members of the public, motorists, and local authorities have been urged to take precautionary measures to minimise potential loss of life and property, especially in urban areas where drainage systems are often overwhelmed during heavy downpours.

“Residents in affected counties are advised to be alert for floods and landslides, avoid walking or driving through moving water, and stay away from open fields and trees during storms,” the notice read.
