Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has issued a statement following the death of a tourist who collapsed at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa in Naivasha.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the power producer confirmed that the incident happened on Sunday, September 7, when a local tourist suddenly collapsed while enjoying the facility.

KenGen said its lifeguards and medical staff on site acted immediately, administering first aid and advanced life support before transferring the individual to Naivasha Level IV Hospital.

The transfer was done using one of KenGen’s ambulances, which was stationed at the spa as part of its safety preparedness. Despite the rapid response, both at the spa and at the hospital, the visitor was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

“Despite all emergency efforts, both on-site and at the hospital, the visitor was sadly pronounced deceased while receiving treatment,” KenGen said in its statement.

Olkaria Geothermal Spa

The Olkaria Geothermal Spa, located inside Hell’s Gate National Park, is one of Kenya’s most unique tourist destinations. It is Africa’s largest geothermal spa, built as part of KenGen’s demonstration centre to showcase direct-use applications of geothermal energy.

The spa consists of three cascading lagoons with varying water temperatures, from as high as 90 degrees Celsius in the inlet lagoon to around 35 degrees Celsius in the largest lagoon, which can hold up to 400 people at a time. A shallow pool for children is also part of the facility, and lifeguards are always on duty to enhance safety.

The spa attracts both local and international tourists who travel to Naivasha to experience its therapeutic waters, scenic views, and proximity to wildlife within Hell’s Gate National Park. Because of its popularity, the sudden death of a visitor has raised concerns and cast a shadow over the normally vibrant resort.
