Lands Cabinet Secretary (CS) Farida Karoney and Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) Director-General Mohamed Badi have agreed to waive land rent and rates in a new push to issue 18,000 title deeds to Nairobi residents.
In a joint press conference held at the NMS offices on Friday, CS Karoney called on landowners to take advantage of the moratorium and take part in the new titling phase that targets to fast-track the issuance of 18,000 title deeds to landowners in Nairobi.
“During the issuance of title deeds to shareholders of Embakasi Ranching Company last month, the President directed the ministry to work with NMS to ensure every bonafide landowner in Nairobi gets their title deeds. As a ministry, we are committed to working hard to realise the President’s land reform agenda,” Ms Karoney said.
The two were speaking after a meeting to put in place the modalities for a new round of registration, processing, and issuance of title deeds to landowners in different parts of Nairobi.
“We have agreed that the national government, through the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, and the Nairobi Metropolitan Services will work towards the issuance of title deeds to Site and Service Schemes, Tenant Purchase Schemes, county allotted properties, land-buying companies and other scheme owners free of charge,” Ms Karoney said
In her speech, the Lands boss urged landowners to take advantage of the moratorium on land rents and rates to submit their documents for title deed processing.
NMS boss, in his address, expressed his readiness to work with the Lands ministry to ensure the success of the project.
Residents in Mathare, Huruma, Umoja, Dandora, Kayole, Kariobangi, and Bahati are those set to benefit from the programme.
Among the things that landowners are required to bring for the verification exercise include original allotment document, two recent colour passport photos, a copy of National Identification Card (ID), a copy of KRA PIN Certificate, and clearance certificate.
The exercise will run from Wednesday, September 23, 2020, to October 10, 2020, from 9 am to 4 pm.
