Kaluma to detractors: We are not leaving govt

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma is basking in the glory of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)’s partnership with President William Ruto’s government, saying the party has no plans of pulling out any time soon.
The MP made the statement on his official X account while sharing a photo of President Ruto standing next to ODM party leader Raila Odinga. Kaluma suggested that ODM is not preoccupied with past political rivalries but is instead focused on making the most of its current position within government.
“You don’t have the one you love; you love the one you have. We are in government and we are not leaving any time soon!” Kaluma posted.

The outspoken MP recently spoke out against ongoing calls for street protests, saying his community had moved past protests and was now focused on development and governance.
“Our people will not join you in your useless street protests. We have been on the streets, dying for you, since independence. We are in government, busy rebuilding after years of neglect,” he wrote on a post shared on June 19, 2025.
Kaluma expressed frustration over what he described as the historical exploitation of his community during Kenya’s many struggles for democracy and justice.
He said it was time for his people to prioritise nation-building instead of being used to fight political battles in the streets.
“For decades, we were the ones marching, getting arrested, or even dying for change. We have paid the price. Now that we are in government, we must rebuild and focus on real progress,” Kaluma added.
“We are no longer interested in outdated activism. It’s time to lead and build this nation,” he said.
In another previous statement shared via his X account on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, Kaluma bragged about his close ties with the government, announcing that a series of government projects were set to be launched in Homa Bay starting Monday, July 7, 2025.
He praised the move as a major milestone, indicating that the region is finally reaping the rewards of aligning with the ruling administration.
“The Government will be in Homa Bay from Monday, July 7, 2025, for various development programmes. We are busy rebuilding after decades of discrimination and neglect. Our people have no time for demonstrations. Let those entitled tribalists loot and destroy their property,” Kaluma posted.
