Irungu Nyakera slams Murkomen’s shoot-to-kill order to police

The former chairperson of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Board, Irungu Nyakera, has sharply criticised Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen over his recent remarks instructing police to shoot anyone approaching a police station.
Nyakera described the directive as “reckless, dangerous” and a clear incitement to extrajudicial killings.
Taking to his official X account on Friday, June 27, 2025, Nyakera condemned the statement and urged police officers not to obey what he called “illegal orders”.
“CS Murkomen’s call for police to shoot anyone approaching a station is reckless, dangerous, and is an incitement to more extrajudicial killings,” Nyakera wrote.
He went on to deliver a strong warning to members of the police service, reminding them of the consequences of obeying such unlawful instructions.
“To our police officers: don’t follow illegal orders because: The blood you spill will not be forgotten. As you kill other people’s children, remember your own are out there too. Karma is real. ICC doesn’t forget and you will be on your own when they come calling.”
Nyakera ended his statement with a powerful quote by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.”

Shoot-to-kill remarks
His remarks come just hours after CS Murkomen, while visiting police stations in Kiambu County on June 26, 2025, said that police officers had been directed to shoot anyone approaching stations with what he described as “ill intentions”.
“Tumeambia polisi, mtu yeyote ambaye atakaribia police station, piga yeye risasi, ” Murkomen stated, speaking in Swahili.
Translates to: “We’ve told the police, anyone who comes near a police station, shoot them.”
The comments have sparked widespread outrage, with human rights activists, lawyers, and political leaders expressing concern that such orders could fuel more police brutality.
Lawyer Willis Otieno also criticised the directive.
“Dear Police Officers, If you choose to follow illegal orders from @kipmurkomen or any politician drunk on power, know this: you will stand alone in the dock,” he said.
Otieno warned officers that the same leaders pushing for violence would later abandon them, and no uniform or title would protect them from accountability.
