The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted fluctuating rainfall patterns across various regions of the country between March 11 and March, 17, 2025.

According to the forecast, most parts of Kenya will experience a temporary break in rainfall during the midweek before precipitation resumes towards the end of the week. The regions expected to receive rainfall include the Highlands both west and east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, as well as parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.

In a statement shared via X on Thursday, March 13, 2025, the weather department noted that while rainfall intensity will decrease in the middle of the week, it is expected to pick up again as the forecast period concludes. Additionally, isolated heavy downpours may occur both at the start and the end of the seven-day forecast period.

Temperature variations are also expected during this period, with daytime temperatures projected to rise above 30 degrees Celsius in the Coastal, Northeastern, and Northwestern regions. On the other hand, cooler nighttime temperatures, dropping below 10 degrees Celsius, are anticipated in the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region.

“Weather Outlook: 11–17 March 2025 Rain takes a break over most parts midweek, then resumes at the end of the week! Rainfall expected over Highlands West & East of the Rift Valley (incl. Nairobi), Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-eastern Lowlands, Coast & parts of Northwestern & Northeastern Kenya. Rainfall intensity will reduce midweek but increase again towards the end of the period. Isolated heavy rainfall may occur at the start & end of the forecast period. Daytime temperatures: >30°C in Coast, Northeastern & Northwestern Kenya. Nighttime temperatures: <10°C in Highlands East of Rift, Central Rift Valley & Mt. Kilimanjaro region,” the weatherman stated.

On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a weather update indicating that Nairobi was among the regions expected to experience rainfall between Wednesday, February 12, and Thursday, February 13, 2025.

According to the forecast, various parts of Nairobi would receive light to moderate rainfall over the two days.

In addition to Nairobi, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley were also set to experience light showers. This region includes counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka.

The weatherman also predicted rainfall for the South-Eastern Lowlands, which comprises Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties.

“Most areas will remain dry and sunny, but light to moderate showers are likely over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, South-Eastern Lowlands, and Nairobi,” read part of the statement from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The department attributed the expected showers to the high temperatures and dry conditions that had persisted in various parts of the country for the past three weeks.

Aside from the anticipated rainfall, the department also warned of strong winds in parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya. Counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo were expected to experience strong winds exceeding 12.5 meters per second.
