Hashi pushes for tougher recall laws to eject underperforming MPs

Political analyst Ahmed Hashi has called for the introduction of stronger recall mechanisms for underperforming Members of Parliament, arguing that just as faulty products like cars or medicine are recalled for public safety, elected leaders who fail to deliver should also be held accountable by their constituents.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Monday, August 4 2025, Hashi called on various Government institutions taking part in the process of creating the government to take accountability seriously.
Hashi, while urging Kenyans to stand firm against underperformance by Members of Parliament, urged citizens not to fear recalling bad governance.
“If we can recall bad medicine and bad cars from the shop, or the manufacturer can issue a recall notice, why not a bad member of Parliament?” Hashi said.
Likewise, Hashi further called on Kenyans to push for transparency, practical thinking, and relatable decision-making that serves the public interest. “We want to make common sense to the people of this country,” he added.

Corrupt legislators
In addition, Hashi called out Legislators for failing to administer their duties while stating that corruption has taken over the National Assembly.
I think the more common sense we inject into this issue, the better it is, so if you have a bad car that is veering to the right and is suppose to be veering to the left, the MPs are doing the same in the national assembly for example how national assembly is unable to deal with a President who is causing bedlum in the Country we know why, because of corruption,” Hashi said.
Similarly, he also called upon the government to find simple ways of recalling underperforming and rogue MPs from service.
“We must find a simple process to recall these MPs who are rogue,” Hashi said.
Govt role in educating voters
On the other hand, he also added that the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission(IEBC) should provide a proper voter education programme which aims at educating citizens about choosing leaders.
“One of the things that is important is voter education, IEBC need to have a really good programme for voter education,” he added.
Likewise, he urged political parties to vet aspirants as well to further address the accountability challenge in the country.
“Political parties have to vet the people who are coming in to stand for these elections,” he noted.
Hashi further called on the Judicial system to ensure a clean process while handling cases of injustice and governance.
“We also need to ensure that the judicial system in the country is clean, make sure that our judges and all people dealing the the issues of injustice are clean,” said Hashi.
