Govt warns politicians against hate speech after Kahiga’s remarks
Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has warned politicians against making divisive remarks following the controversial comments made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.
Mwaura said the government had taken note of Kahiga’s utterances, describing them as unpatriotic and insensitive, especially at a time when the country is mourning the death of Raila Odinga.

“The Government has noted with deep concern the unpatriotic remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga. Such utterances are not only regrettable but also extremely unfortunate, especially coming at a time when our nation is still mourning the death of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, a respected statesman and one of Kenya’s founding pillars of democracy. We condemn such divisive, insensitive and disrespectful remarks,” a statement from the Office of the President shared on X on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, reads.
The statement said that under President William Ruto’s leadership, every devolved unit is receiving its rightful share of national resources regardless of political affiliation.
“Under President William Samoei Ruto’s decisive leadership, every devolved unit gets its rightful share of the national cake. The President has risen above acrimonious politics, serving all Kenyans whether they voted for him or not and is ensuring that no corner of this nation is left behind,” it stated.

Action against hate speech
The government appealed to all political leaders to exercise restraint and avoid using language that could divide Kenyans during this period of national grief.
“At this delicate time of national grief, we urge all leaders to refrain from the language of hate and embrace the spirit of one united Kenya. Leaders may disagree and differ in opinions, but Kenya belongs to all of us,” the statement said.
Mwaura said the government welcomed Kahiga’s resignation as vice chairman of the Council of Governors and directed that further action be taken against any leader promoting ethnic division.
“Over and above Mutahi Kahiga resigning, stern action must also be taken against any leader who incites or fosters division amongst Kenyans based on ethnic or other lines,” Mwaura said.
The statement also urged NCIC and DCI to take firm measures against hate speech offenders as provided under section 13 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act (NCIA) and other relevant laws.
