Rosemary Koech’s journal details her battle with depression and fears about her home

Rosemary Koech Kimwatu’s sister has shared details from Koech’s journal, revealing her struggles with depression and fears about losing her home.
Speaking at her sister’s memorial service in Chepseon, Kericho County, on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Judy Koech said Koech, also known as Chemutai, had been dealing with several things that disturbed her for some time.
She explained that Chemutai used to keep a journal where she wrote about issues affecting her life. The journal showed how she dealt with the business world and marriage issues while also recording things that were troubling her.
“Chemutai was killed slowly. Slowly by depression. She had the fear of losing her home,” Rosemary Koech Kimwatu’s sister said.
The sister said she decided to read an excerpt from the journal because it gave a picture of Chemutai’s state of mind before her passing. She described the writing as heartbreaking and said the journal showed what Chemutai had been going through.
“I start by reading the journal, which is heartbreaking because you see the state of her mind by the time of her passing,” Rosemary Koech Kimwatu’s sister said.
She explained that Chemutai would list the things that were disturbing her in the journal. The entries covered different parts of her life, including her work in business and issues around marriage. She said the journal provided a record of how Chemutai was dealing with those matters.
Fears over her home and children
The sister then shared part of an entry in which Chemutai wrote about her home and the fear that she would not be able to enjoy what she had worked hard to build with her children. The entry also showed her concerns about what could happen to the home.
“Chemutai wrote, ‘ What is stressing me, the house?” Rosemary Koech Kimwatu’s sister said while reading the journal.
She explained that Chemutai had expressed concern that someone else could benefit from the work she had put into the home. The entry showed how strongly the issue affected her and how she felt about the situation involving her children.
“The fact that I worked so hard on something and I can’t enjoy it with my children…someone else may enjoy my hard work,” Chemutai wrote, according to her sister.
The sister said the journal also showed Chemutai’s feelings of being hurt and used. She explained that Chemutai was worried about how things would work out in raising her children with the other parent.
“I feel betrayed and used. I don’t know how coparenting will go,” Chemutai wrote, according to her sister.
The journal offered a glimpse into the fears and struggles Chemutai was facing, including her concerns about her home, children, marriage and depression.
