Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has arrived in the Senate ahead of his second ouster motion case.

The Senators will be tasked with determining the validity of various charges brought against Governor Mutai, including gross violations of the Constitution, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The hearings will be done in the plenary of the full House. The county boss will be required to enter a plea, either admitting or denying culpability.

The Kericho County Assembly will then present its case first, setting out evidence and arguments to justify the removal of the Governor.

Mutai, through his defence team, will then be allowed to respond, countering the accusations by the County Assembly. The Senate will then debate the motion before casting the vote.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has scheduled Kericho Governor Erick Mutai’s impeachment hearing from Wednesday, August 27, 2025, to Friday, August 29, 2025.

According to Parliament, the impeachment process will follow a structured format beginning with the formal reading of charges on Wednesday, when Governor Mutai will be required to enter a plea.

“The process will formally begin on Wednesday with the reading of the charges against Governor Mutai. At that stage, the governor will be required to enter a plea, either admitting or denying culpability,” Parliament outlined.

Following the plea, the Kericho County Assembly, which initiated the impeachment process, will present its case first, with legal teams expected to table documents and cross-examine witnesses to substantiate their allegations.

“He is expected to counter the accusations and provide his own witnesses that will also be subjected to cross-examination. After both sides have been heard, the Senate will debate the motion before casting a decisive vote on Friday, 29th August. It will require a majority of delegations voting by county to either uphold or dismiss the charges,” the statement added.

The charges facing Governor Mutai include gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

The county boss insists he is innocent and claims the County Assembly, which has voted to impeach him for the second time in a year, denied him a fair hearing.

A total of 33 out of 47 MCAs supported the impeachment motion, citing multiple allegations, including the payment of Sh85.7 million to 46 companies for goods and services that were allegedly not supplied and for work not done.

Mutai has appealed to residents of the region to pray for him as he faces his accusers.

Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony filed the motion.
