Shock has hit Kamutua village in Gatundu South Constituency, Kiambu County after a 23-year-old woman suffocated her one-and-a-half month-old child inside a bucket full of water and fled.

Susan Wambui who is reported to be of unsound mind is reported to have committed the incident on Friday evening before she went underground.

Neighbours who frequent Wambui’s house to check on her said they found the door locked from outside and upon searching in the compound, one of the baby’s hands was found hanging on the bucket.

“The baby had been drowned inside a bucket full of water and we suspect the child died as a result of saturation,” one of the neighbours said.

According to her relative Damars Kagia, a search of the mother commenced immediately.

She said that Wambui was later found over 20 kilometres away inside the deep forest of Kieni near Gakoe village in Gatundu North on Saturday morning.

Police have since arrested her and taken her to the hospital.

“We have been left with a lot of frustration as most of us have been feeding this family and even checking on them in other ways to ensure they live dignified lives,” Kagia said.
