Gachagua’s message to Gen Zs for helping Kaluma Boy

Former Deputy President Rigathi Wa Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has saluted Gen Zs for the love they showed towards Kaluma Boy, a young man from Othaya, Nyeri, who has been caring for his ailing father.
Speaking exclusively to a local TV station on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua said the compassion demonstrated by the youth is unmatched.

However, he urged them to channel their energy toward shaping Kenya’s political future by registering as voters.

Gachagua praised the young generation for their unity and speed in raising funds to support Kaluma Boy’s family.
“I want to congratulate Gen Z for what they did in Othaya and today in Ruiru, raising funds to support their own. I urge them to register as voters because change is not in their phones or TikToks,” Gachagua said.

He emphasized that while social media activism is powerful, meaningful transformation can only come through active political participation.
“The energy they have is extraordinary, but they must realize that lasting change will only happen when they take charge of leadership through the ballot,” he said.
The DCP leader said Gen Zs represent hope for a better Kenya if they use their influence wisely.
He also commended them for showing solidarity with a cause that touched many Kenyans across different generations.

Who Kaluma Boy is and why he’s trending
Kaluma Boy, a 17-year-old TikTok sensation, became an internet darling after posting videos showing his daily life caring for his bedridden father, who suffered a stroke.
The emotional clips inspired thousands of Kenyans to travel to Othaya and offer both moral and financial support.
In a fundraiser organized by Bishop Ben Kiengei’s Jesus Compassion Ministries, Kenyans raised Ksh2 million in just 30 minutes to help Kaluma Boy’s mother open a business.
The viral teen has also secured a full scholarship to study Sales and Marketing with a focus on digital marketing at the East African University.
Gachagua said the story of Kaluma Boy demonstrates the power of unity and kindness among young people.
“Gen Z has proven that they can lead with empathy and action. That’s the spirit Kenya needs,” he said.
