Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following the shocking death of Father John Ndegwa Maina, a Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyandarua County.

The priest’s demise, which occurred under suspicious circumstances just weeks after hosting Gachagua during his silver jubilee celebrations, has raised alarm, with many suspecting foul play.

Gachagua, in a heartfelt message posted on his X account on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, described the late priest as a courageous man of God who always spoke the truth without fear or favour.

He revealed that John had delivered a powerful sermon during the jubilee event, in which he boldly addressed national issues and openly spoke his mind about the state of the nation.

“Fr John was a great soul and a shepherd of the Lord’s flock; he lived in truth and spoke the truth without fear or favour just as Christ would have done,” Gachagua stated.

He further reflected on the long-standing personal relationship he had with the priest, who served not only as a spiritual guide but also as a trusted confidant.

Gachagua noted that they met several times to discuss matters of national importance, underlining Fr John’s deep interest in the welfare of the country beyond the pulpit.

The former deputy president joined other leaders and Kenyans in calling for thorough investigations into the priest’s death, urging security agencies to act swiftly to ensure justice is served.

“I call upon the security agencies to speed up the investigation and bring the culprits of this heinous act to book,” he urged.

Gachagua also extended his condolences to the parishioners of Igwamiti, the Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu, and the wider Catholic community, describing Fr John’s death as a great loss to the Church and the nation.

“I pass my deepest sympathies to the Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu, Catholic Faithful of Igwamiti Parish, and the Catholic fraternity. I pray to Almighty God to rest the soul of Fr John in eternal peace,” he concluded.
