Three people, including a four months baby, have been reported dead and a total of 15 others injured in four different accidents that happened in Narok over the weekend.
Narok County Police Commander John Kizito Mutoro said in the first accident that occurred at Tegero junction along Narok- Bomet highway on Sunday morning, a Toyota van belonging to 2MKT Sacco was hit from behind by a shuttle belonging ENA Sacco after it suddenly slowed down.
During the accident, both vehicles rolled leaving eight people were injured, four from each of the two vehicles.
Unfortunately, a four- month’s old baby girl who was travelling with her parents in the Toyota van succumbed to injuries on arrival at Ololulung’a Sub-county hospital where the eight injured persons are being treated.
The body of the baby has been moved to Narok Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and further investigations into the accident.
Kizito also said two pillion passengers, a male and a female, died on the spot as the Bajaj boxer motorbike they were travelling on collided head-on with a Toyota Wish saloon car at Kutete area along the said Bomet – Narok highway on Saturday afternoon.
He said during the accident, the vehicle and the motorcycle, whose rider is on the run, rolled and landed in a ditch whereupon three passengers in the car were also injured and are fighting for their lives at Longisa Hospital in Bomet County
The bodies of the deceased persons were being preserved in the same facility awaiting postmortem and further investigations into the accident.
In yet another accident, two people were injured when a Toyota Fielder saloon which was overtaking on a yellow line collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Hiace matatu at Olgilai area along the Narok – Bomet road on Saturday evening.
Two people were injured in the Toyota Hiace matatu after it rolled severally and were also treated at Ololulung`a Sub-county hospital and discharged.
Further, a driver and his passenger were also injured when the Toyota Hiace matatu they were in crashed into a tractor at Siyabei area along the Narok – Ntulele road on Saturday night.
The matatu driver was trying to overtake when the accident occurred at 9:30 pm on Saturday. They were treated at Narok Referral hospital and discharged.
This comes just two days after two people died on the spot and two others were seriously injured when a Toyota-probox motor vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled several times before landing in a ditch at Olonini in Ololulung`a area along the Bomet – Narok highway in Narok South sub-county on Friday.
NTSA estimates that 3,000 Kenyans die from road accidents every year – costing the country anywhere between 3-5 per cent of GDP. 83 per cent of the fatalities are men, with individuals aged between 30-34 years most at risk, thus robbing the country of a very productive age bracket.
However, the World Health Organization (WHO) puts the figures at much higher.
