Ezekiel Mutua: Kenya can host World Cup finals

Former Kenya Film Classification Board CEO Ezekiel Mutua has expressed confidence that Kenya has the potential to host the FIFA World Cup in the future, citing the country’s passion for football and the successful hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a statement on August 30, 2025, Mutua said the tournament had showcased not only Kenya’s love for the game but also the country’s trademark hospitality.

“I think Kenya can host the World Cup, given a chance! This CHAN has revealed Kenya’s love for the sport and our exceptional warmth as a people,” he remarked.

He further praised the government’s efforts in supporting the tournament and the strong turnout of fans, saying it proved Kenya’s readiness for bigger global football opportunities.

“The support from the government led by the president himself, the beautiful facilities, and the impressive attendance… It was just befitting that the final match was played in Nairobi,” Mutua said.

CHAN finals

His remarks come after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed hailed the just-concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) as a defining moment for the country, saying it has solidified Kenya’s status as a football hub on the continent.

In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Hussein celebrated Morocco’s championship victory while emphasising how the tournament’s success has elevated Kenya’s status within African football governance and hosting capabilities.

Congratulations to Morocco for clinching a historic third CHAN title after a thrilling 3-2 win over Madagascar. Commendations as well to Madagascar for their spirited fight and unforgettable journey,” he said.

Hussein stressed that the conclusion of CHAN had set a new benchmark for sporting excellence in the region and positioned Kenya as a leading force in African football.

“With #CHAN2024 successfully concluded, the bar has been set high. Kenya has firmly cemented its place as the epicentre of African football,” he declared.

The FKF President positioned the tournament’s successful delivery as evidence of Kenya’s readiness to host the continent’s most prestigious football events.

“We now look ahead with optimism to AFCON 2027,” he added.
