A church service at PCEA Mwiki, Kasarani East Parish, was momentarily halted after armed goons walked in, intending to cause chaos during the event where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was being hosted as the main guest of honour.

According to videos shared by a local TV channel on Sunday, April 6, 2025, Gachagua’s security team responded immediately and subdued the rowdy intruders, even firing shots into the air to disperse them and prevent the service, which had already commenced, from being abruptly interrupted.

The videos, however, captured the commotion as some panicked congregants began shouting while others started walking out as the drama escalated.

In a separate video shared on Facebook by user @Mwangi Maina, the goons were seen being escorted out through the gate by security in a chaotic moment where church members caught in the scene began scampering for safety.

The damage from the brief standoff was evident as some of the former deputy president’s vehicles were vandalised, and photos shared on social media showed them with holes after stones had been hurled at them.

Additionally, church seats were broken, as in the same video, some of the goons were seen throwing white plastic chairs before Gachagua’s security team was finally able to bring the situation under control.

According to a livestream by the former deputy president, however, calm was quickly restored after the goons were overpowered, and the service resumed as planned with a reverend already delivering a sermon to the congregation.

Gachagua, who has remained silent since President William Ruto embarked on his Mt Kenya tour on April 1, 2025, is expected to comment on the tour and share his thoughts, particularly considering his previous strong remarks against the Head of State visiting the region.

Similar incident

The incident comes a paltry two months after a similar one in which former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga stormed a prayer meeting being led by Gachagua’s wife Pastor Dorcas.

The drama unfolded on the afternoon of January 18, 2025, at the Kamukunji Stadium in Nyeri.

Njenga was accompanied by a group of youths, and upon their arrival, speakers at the podium were forced to cut short their speeches.

Leaders present, led by Nyeri Deputy Governor Waroe Kinaniri and the former Second Lady, left in a huff, fearing retaliation from the youths.

Members of the congregation, mainly women, also left as tension escalated, with Njenga and his group chanting victory songs.

However, the prayers proceeded despite the chaos, with the youths at one point kneeling on the ground in apparent repentance, seeking God’s forgiveness.

Pastor Dorcas had, on Friday, January 17, 2025, invited Kenyans to attend the prayer event.

“We are already preparing for tomorrow’s prayers at Kamukunji Stadium, Nyeri, and we warmly welcome you to join us for this special day of seeking God together.

“Let us come together in unity and faith as we lift our voices in prayer for our nation. ‘If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.’ – 2 Chronicles 7:14. See you there!” Pastor Dorcas stated in a post shared via her official Facebook account.
