A man accused of killing his two daughters in Mombasa in 2018 committed the act to get back to his wife, a Mombasa court has been told.

John Maina Wangombe allegedly killed the minors aged three and six years on December 6, 2018, at Mshomoroni Calvery in Kisauni sub-county.

Former Nyali OCS Billy Onyango told Mombasa High Court Judge Njoki Mwangi during the hearing of the murder case against Wangombe that the suspect was angered after his wife attended an interview at a nearby school for a teaching position, against his will.

In his testimony, the officer, currently attached to Witu police station, told the court that Wangombe was against his wife’s decision to be employed. Apparently, he wanted her to remain at home as a housewife and take care of their three children.

The court was told that moments after his wife left for the interview, the man, who worked as a hawker, fed the babies with some fruits which had been bought by the woman before he stabbed them to death.

“One of the minors had gone out to play, and this is how he managed to survive the attack that led to the death of his younger siblings, aged four and six years he took turns to stab the two victims on the forehead,” Onyango said.

The court heard that the suspect wrapped the minors’ bodies in a bed sheet and put them on the bed as he pondered his next move.

“After residents raised alarm due to the screams by the minors before they were murdered as they pleaded with their father to spare their lives after he was done with the heinous act he picked a 20-litre jerrican and sat on it staring at the scene. When police arrived he did not utter a word and he seemed not aware of what had transpired,” Onyango added.

The officer alleged that the suspect had cleaned the two murder weapons and placed them in a bucket full of water before they were recovered.

The suspect was arrested and whisked to safety by police officers since members of the public were baying for his blood.

Wangombe has denied killing the two minors.

The hearing continues.
